Brighton Film Quartet presents... daytime, educational concerts of live music, vocals & soundtrack set to visuals

Inspirational, educational and fun... SOUNDSCAPE is an exciting and moving live concert featuring piano, cello, violin and clarinet set to a vibrant soundtrack, vocals and breathtaking big-screen visuals. The Quartet's concert is perfect for school-children from Key Stages 1-5, and is a unique chance for them to see a concert of live music "up close and personal", to be inspired by the different instruments, the blend of music to film footage, to hear the work of a local female composer, and to send them away buzzing with the desire to see more live music in future.

In collaboration with 10 Brighton-based filmmakers, the visuals are a sensory feast featuring both local and international scenery - from the cliffs of the Seven Sisters shot by drone to the magical ice-scapes of Greenland. Together with the dramatic soundtrack of orchestral sounds & drumbeats and subtle vocals, this music will have a young audience completely spellbound!

how it works

After a short introduction to the instruments and the music, the concert (40-50 minutes delivered in school time) finishes with a Q&A session and Meet the Musicians. Each child receives information on local instrument tuition and choirs, and where to attend concerts & music workshops in the area, plus access to our Sussex Music Hub (a music resource for the area), see bottom of page. We can also incorporate an add-on 30-minute workshop for students studying music & film for a little extra charge. Offered free to schools, our aim is to bring SOUNDSCAPE to every school in Sussex – for this we need your help! To sponsor or request a concert, please contact Penny on 0788 1915593.

about the quartet

With the National Curriculum in mind, these concerts showcase three instrument groups: keyboard, woodwind and strings (the only Quartet of its kind in the UK). 100% local, the girls live in Brighton and their pianist, Penny, composes all the music - a fabulous mix of old and new... cinematic & classical combine elements of tango, pop and trip hop! Brighton Film Quartet have performed sell-out SOUNDSCAPE concerts every year at the Fringe (Spiegeltent), the Royal Pavilion, Duke of York's cinema, Hurst, Arundel, Uckfield festivals and many other venues. Three of the four members of the Quartet are instrumental teachers with the Brighton & Hove Music Service in local schools.

become a sponsor

Offered free to schools, our concerts are only possible with sponsorship from local businesses and invididuals like you! If you'd like to sponsor a specific school in Brighton & Hove, please just ask.

With the option to have your business as sponsor on the concert programme for both children (and parents who are also invited), and on our website/social media, we also offer you tickets to attend (and if you've never heard the sound of 300 kids screaming with excitement at the end of a concert, you ain't lived!) plus photos for social media use. Finally, research shows that music develops the brain, helps create healthy minds and happy young people... be a part of our passion to inspire children's interest in one of the most highly creative and satisfying art forms.

Thank you for your help! Penny, Emma, Sophie & Abi X

Our five aims are:

1) to offer schoolchildren an unforgettable experience of live music "up close and personal" in a unique multimedia setting featuring visuals, soundtrack and vocals

2) to inspire children to learn a musical instrument or sing

3) to encourage pupils to attend concerts and live music events locally

4) to show the sheer versatility of styles possible with an ensemble, from classical, cinematic through to trip hop!

5) to present future career paths for budding musicians in a positive light with strong female role models (composer, musicians and many of our filmmakers)

Learn an instrument

Schools – many schools in Brighton and Sussex offer instrumental tuition through the Brighton & Hove Music Service. Please contact them to see if your school is involved, or ask directly at your school office what tuition is provided. Group lessons can be fun and educational, and a great introduction to playing an instrument and general musical knowledge, learning with peers, taking part in assemblies etc.

Private tuition – learning one-to-one from home can suit some children, giving a more focused, and sometimes very motivational angle to learning. In Brighton & Hove, a well reputed agency who offer a range of different instrumental teachers is Susanna Cassam. Other options include Sussex Music School, and Netmums. Otherwise for Brighton and the Sussex area, options are:, East Sussex County Council.
